Castanets Flashcard for Preschoolers

Castanets — two little shells that click together in your hand. They are pocket-sized, they are fast, and they turn any hand into the tiniest drum kit in the Music Room.

A Music Room flashcard with the word "Castanets" and a friendly illustration of a pair of castanets.

What is this instrument?

Castanets are two hollow shells joined by a cord. Hold one shell in your palm, snap the other against it with your fingers — Spanish flamenco dancers have used them for centuries.

What does it sound like?

A dry, quick click-click-click, like a woodpecker with rhythm. Fast clicks sound excited; slow clicks sound like a tiny horse walking.

Why it helps a preschooler

Clicking castanets builds a giant skill quietly: waiting. The space between clicks matters as much as the clicks — children feel rests for the first time without any words at all.

Say it together

“Click-click-clickity-click! Castanets talk with their mouths shut — the fastest chatter in the room.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Click a rhythm with your tongue against the roof of your mouth — click-click… click! Hands free castanets. Then click fast like a spider, slow like a snail, and ask which is which.

Quick parent note

No castanets at home? Two spoons or two bottle tops back-to-back click just as well. The sound is small, so this is the perfect instrument for restaurants and waiting rooms.
