Guitar Flashcard for Preschoolers

A guitar — six strings, a wooden waist and a sound that fits under anyone’s arm. Strum it gently for a lullaby, strum it loudly for a party: the guitar is the most bring-alongable instrument there is.

A Music Room flashcard with the word "Guitar" and a friendly illustration of a guitar with its strings.

What is this instrument?

A guitar is a wooden box with a hole under six strings. Fingers of one hand press the strings against the neck; the other hand strums or plucks, and the box makes the strings big enough to hear.

What does it sound like?

Warm chords and cheerful plinks. Guitars carry campfire songs, lullabies and rock’n’roll — sometimes all three in one afternoon if the player is six.

Why it helps a preschooler

A guitar responds to the tiniest touch, which makes it the perfect first real instrument: brush a string, get a note, brush harder, get louder. Cause and effect never sounded better.

Say it together

“Strum-strum-strum! The guitar hums when you brush all its strings at once — like petting a cat that sings.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Stretch rubber bands of different thicknesses over a shoebox with a hole cut in the lid — a box guitar. Pluck each band: thick string low, thin string high. Line up three and play a chord.

Quick parent note

Real guitars come in half sizes for small players. Until then, the shoebox version teaches every part that matters: strings, plucking, and the magical hole in the middle.
