Lyrics Flashcard for Preschoolers
Lyrics — the words a song sings. The tune is the ride; the lyrics are where it is taking you. This card celebrates the part of music you could write on paper: the story, the question, the silly bit about the bus.

What does this word mean?
Lyrics are the words of a song — what the singer says note by note. Some songs have many, some have just one happy word, and both count.
Where do we hear it?
They carry meaning. Lyrics tell the story in the song, ask the questions, name the wheels on the bus going round — the melody makes you hum it, the lyrics make you know it.
Why it helps a preschooler
Sung words are a language workout in disguise: rhymes stretch ears for sounds, repetition builds vocabulary, and children routinely learn new words first from songs and only second from books.
Say it together
“The song says words! Sing the tune, then say what it SAYS — the lyrics are the song’s talking part.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Sing a favourite song, then ask: what did the song SAY? Let your child tell the story of the lyrics in their own talking voice — then swap: turn a bedtime instruction into song lyrics and sing it.
Quick parent note
Misheard lyrics are a family treasure — whatever your child thinks the words are, write it down. Making up new lyrics to a known tune is the next game, and it never ends.
