Volume — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches volume — music’s loud-soft knob: the dial that turns a whisper into a giant and back again, and the musician’s most social skill.

What is this?

Volume is how loud or soft a sound is: whispers, chatting, shouting — music uses the whole range. Soft for lullabies and secrets, loud for celebrations and fanfares, and the in-between for everything else.

What does it mean?

Volume is the musician’s manners AND their paint: a song that is loud all the way through is just noise; the QUIET parts make the loud parts land. Controlling the dial — growing, shrinking, stopping — is dynamics, and it starts with a game.

What does the child need to know?

Your child needs three volume ideas: volume is loud or SOFT — not high or low (that is pitch again!); the dial has many steps, not two — whisper, talk, big, GIANT; and growing and shrinking — getting louder and softer SLOWLY — is the real musician’s trick.

Why this matters

Dynamic control is the difference between playing an instrument and operating it — and the grow-quiet game builds it as pure joy, which is the only way it sticks.

What it teaches

Dynamic range control, crescendo-decrescendo (growing and shrinking), the pitch-versus-volume distinction reinforced, and the social sense of when loud is welcome.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Volume is the loud-soft knob! Whisper it… talk it… BIG it… GIANT it — the dial has many steps. And the musician’s trick is the GROW: start soft as a secret and grow sloooowly to a giant — a sound sunrise! Then shrink back — a sunset. Soft parts make the loud parts land. That is how songs breathe."”

Step by step

  1. Show the card: "This is volume — the loud-soft knob."
  2. The dial: whisper it… talk it… BIG it… GIANT it — the same word at four volumes. The dial has steps, not just ends.
  3. The mix-up again: whisper HIGH, shout LOW — volume and pitch are still two separate knobs; one more game to prove it.
  4. The grow: start whisper-soft and GROW slowly to giant — a sound sunrise! Then shrink — a sunset. Growing and shrinking slowly is the musician’s trick.
  5. Play the dial games below and close: "soft to giant, slowly."

Look closer at the picture

On this card the word "Volume" stands in big navy capitals inside the rounded frame, with a friendly loud-soft illustration below — exactly as the dynamics dial looks.

Ask your child

"What is volume — high-low or loud-soft? Name the dial’s steps. What is the grow?"

What your child can say or do

Your child might say: "Loud or soft — the dial!" "Whisper, talk, BIG, GIANT!" or the sunriser: "I grew my sound from secret to giant!"

Out in the real world

Volumes fill every day: library-soft, playground-big, birthday-GIANT — and every song manages all of them. Listen for the quiet verse before the big chorus tonight: the dial at work.

Try it together

Sound Sunrise: everyone hums one note at whisper level. On the leader’s slow hand-raise, the hum GROWS — whisper, talk, big, GIANT — then sinks back down on the hand-lower: sunset. Three sunrises, three sunsets, zero shouting crashes. Then the opposite game: "loud librar-y?" — no! "Soft football stadium?" — no! The dial, its manners, and its drama, all owned.

Understanding check

Ask: "What is volume? What is the grow? Are loud-soft and high-low the same knob?" Loud or soft, growing slowly, no — three answers and the dial breathes.

Parent tips

The slow hand is the conductor’s trick — growing needs TIME to be musical. And celebrate the controlled GIANT: loud is welcome when it is shaped.
