Ball — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

What is this?

A ball is a round toy that rolls, bounces and flies: the round shape means it always moves, and every game on the playground — catch, kick, bowling, tag-with-a-ball — runs on one.

What does it mean?

The ball is the best first sports tool because it is honest: it goes exactly where the force sends it. Roll it gently and it rolls gently — the ball is a force teacher, and every push and throw is a lesson it answers.

What does the child need to know?

Your child needs three ball ideas: ROLLING is the floor trick — push from underneath, along the ground; BOUNCING is the push-down trick — the ball comes back for more; and gentle hands — the ball is a friend, and friends are not thrown at faces.

Why this matters

Every ball game the child will ever play — soccer, basketball, tennis — is one of these three tricks grown up. Learn the ball’s three tricks and the whole world of sport opens.

What it teaches

Force control (gentle to strong), tracking a moving ball, the three-strike vocabulary (roll-bounce-throw), and the gentle-hands social rule.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"The ball is the playground’s most willing toy — it knows three tricks! ROLL it — push from underneath along the floor. BOUNCE it — push down, and it comes back for more! THROW it — underarm, gentle, to a friend’s chest. One ball, three tricks, a hundred games. And the ball rule: gentle hands — the ball is a friend!"”

Step by step

  1. Show the card: "This is ball — the playground’s most willing toy!"
  2. Trick one, roll: push from UNDERNEATH, along the floor — rolling is the floor trick. Roll it to a partner and back.
  3. Trick two, bounce: push DOWN from above — the ball comes back up! Catch it. Bouncing is the push-down trick.
  4. Trick three, throw: underarm toss to a partner’s chest — the flying trick, taught gentle.
  5. Play the follow-the-ball game below and close: "roll, bounce, throw — gentle hands."

Look closer at the picture

On this card the word "Ball" stands in big navy capitals inside the rounded frame, with a friendly ball illustration below — exactly as the round toy looks.

Ask your child

"Name the ball’s three tricks. Which trick pushes from underneath? What is the ball rule for friends?"

What your child can say or do

Your child might say: "Roll, bounce, throw!" "Bounce — it comes back for more!" or the gentle one: "Gentle hands — the ball is a friend!"

Out in the real world

Balls live in every home, park and school bag — and the three tricks are the first three skills of every sport. Roll one tonight down the hallway: the willingness is contagious.

Try it together

Follow-the-Ball: one ball, all three tricks in a circuit — roll to your partner, partner bounces three times and catches, partner throws back underarm. Run the circuit five times, then swap order. Finish with trick-invention: what ELSE can the ball do? (Spin it, balance it on the head, roll it down the slide-approach!) The willing toy rewards every idea.

Understanding check

Ask: "Name the three tricks. Which comes back by itself? What is the friend rule?" Roll-bounce-throw, the bounce, gentle hands — three answers and the games begin.

Parent tips

Start with a mid-size soft ball — big enough to track, soft enough to fail. And the gentle-hands rule is said every round: it is the treaty that keeps every future ball game kind.
