Playground Swing — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches the swing as a machine with parts — chains, seat, arc — and the safe-ride system that turns the playground’s flying seat into a ritual every rider knows.

What is this?
A swing is a seat hanging from chains or ropes: the seat carries you, the chains hold, and the ride is an arc — up forward, up backward, the sky swinging by on both ends.
What does it mean?
Naming the parts makes the flying seat a known machine: chains hold, seat carries, the arc has two high points and a low middle — and the safe-ride system (mount, hold, pump, slow, step) is the ritual that keeps every flight joyful.
What does the child need to know?
Your child needs three swing-system ideas: the parts — chains hold, seat carries, the arc flies between two high points; the middle of the arc is the FASTEST part — the ends are the slow, safe corners; and the safe-ride system: mount from the front, hold, pump, slow down, step off.
Why this matters
Known machines feel friendly — naming chains-seat-arc turns the swing’s flight into physics a child can explain, and the five-step system is the ride’s whole safety culture.
What it teaches
Machine-part naming, arc understanding (fast middle, slow ends), the five-step safe-ride ritual, and waiting for slow swings before dismounting.

Say this to your child
“"The swing is a machine with parts! The CHAINS hold, the SEAT carries, and the ARC is the ride — flying between two high corners, fastest in the middle, slow at the ends. And the safe-ride system: mount from the front… hold the chains… pump the legs… slow down… step off. Five steps, every ride — the sky, safely, forever!"”
Step by step
- Show the card: "This is the swing — chains, seat, and the flying arc!"
- The parts: the CHAINS hold, the SEAT carries, the ARC is the ride — forward high, back high, fast in the middle.
- The arc’s secret: the middle is the fast part, the two ends are the slow corners — that is why the ends are the safe places to be.
- The safe-ride system: mount from the front, hold the chains, pump the legs, slow down at the end, step off — five steps, every ride.
- Play the system game below and close: "mount, hold, pump, slow, step."
Look closer at the picture
On this card the word "Swing" stands in big navy capitals inside the rounded frame, with a friendly swing illustration below — exactly as the chains, seat and arc look.
Ask your child
"Name the swing’s parts. Where is the arc fastest? Say the five safe-ride steps."
What your child can say or do
Your child might say: "Chains, seat, arc!" "Fast in the middle, slow at the corners!" or the system-rider: "Mount, hold, pump, slow, step!"
Out in the real world
Swings hang on every playground with the same three parts — and the five-step system transfers to every swing, rope or boat ride after. Naming the machine is owning the machine.
Try it together
Five-Step Flights: at the swing, say the system aloud as you ride it — "mount… hold… pump… (flying!)… slow… step!" — three full flights with the words pacing the ride. Then the parts quiz: point to the chains, the seat, the arc’s middle. Finish with a slow-corner rest: hang at the back corner, feel how slow and safe the ends are. The machine named, the system ridden, the sky mastered.
Understanding check
Ask: "Name the parts. Where are the slow corners? Count the five steps." Chains-seat-arc, the ends, mount-hold-pump-slow-step — three answers and the flight is safe.
Parent tips
Say the five steps WITH the rider — the words are the ritual; rituals are the safety. And the slow-corner rest quietly teaches why the ends are the dismount places.
