The playground swing — two chains, one seat, endless sky. This one is a blue A-frame with a green seat: the sight that makes children drop their scooters mid-ride.

What is this?

A swing is a seat hanging on chains from a frame. Push off or get pushed, then keep it going by pumping your legs — out on the way forward, tucked on the way back.

What is it like on the playground?

The swings are the playground’s waiting room and its throne room at once — queues full of “is it my turn yet?”, riders full of glory. Two swings, one rhythm each.

Why it helps a preschooler

Swinging is rhythm, momentum and that delicious tummy-float all in one. Pumping your own legs is a coordination milestone — the day the pushes stop being needed is a small graduation.

Say it together

“Sit deep, hold tight, lean back — the swing moves when YOU move. Pump out like a frog, tuck in like a mouse.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Count the pumps: how many leg pumps to touch the leaves? Then try the quiet game — swing with no pushes at all, just rhythm, as long as you can.

Quick parent note

Swing rules travel well: hold on with both hands, no jumping off at the top of the arc, and walk AROUND, not behind. Say it once, cheer it often.
