Little — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

Five minutes, one card: say “little” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“A little bird sat.”) and finish with one small game.

Sight word flashcard “little”: a very small boy stands alone surrounded by white space, with the word LITTLE printed below.
LittleSight word flashcard · Card 31 of 52

What it means

It describes something small.

How to teach it

  1. Hold up the card and read “little” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: a tall l, an i, two tall t's, then an l and an e.
  2. On the drawing canvas, let your child trace over the word with a finger or the pencil, then circle any letter they already know.
  3. Play the game below, say “little” one last time and stop while it is still fun.

How to say it

Say it in two chunks: lit-tle, with a quick light le at the end.

Where to use it

Say it in a real sentence: “A little bird sat.” Then try “I have a little dog.” Where to spot it: small things and baby animals, like little duck.

Try this game

Make yourself small, say little and whisper it. Compare a little toy with a big one.

Understanding check

Hold up two objects and ask which one fits “little”, then read the card together once more.

Parent tips

Keep it to five minutes, and add “little” to the card pile only when the words your child already knows feel easy.

This lesson pairs with the Little flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
