We — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

Five minutes, one card: say “we” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“We can play.”) and finish with one small game.

Sight word flashcard “we”: three children stand arm in arm, with the word WE printed below.
WeSight word flashcard · Card 7 of 52

What it means

It means me and other people together.

How to teach it

  1. Hold up the card and read “we” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: a w that looks like two valleys, followed by a little e.
  2. On the drawing canvas, let your child trace over the word with a finger or the pencil, then circle any letter they already know.
  3. Play the game below, say “we” one last time and stop while it is still fun.

How to say it

Say wee, with lips rounded first for the w. It rhymes with me and see.

Where to use it

Say it in a real sentence: “We can play.” Then try “We are a team.” Where to spot it: storybook friends and family plans, such as we are going.

Try this game

Hold hands in a circle and say We can clap, We can hop, We can spin. Do each action as you say it.

Understanding check

Ask your child to say one real sentence about themselves or someone nearby that uses “we”. A sentence they made up is the best proof.

Parent tips

Keep it to five minutes, and add “we” to the card pile only when the words your child already knows feel easy.

This lesson pairs with the We flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
