Scissor Lift, Material Lift, Tunnel Borer & Trencher — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches up-and-through: lifts that fold like scissors, the tunnel borer that eats through mountains, and the trencher that draws a straight line in the earth like a giant pencil.

What is this?
Four up-and-through machines: scissor lift (folds upward), material lift (hoists loads up scaffolds), tunnel boring machine (chews tunnels — the set’s biggest vehicle) and trenching machine (cuts long straight ditches).
What does it mean?
The tunnel borer is the biggest machine in the entire class — some as long as a football field — and its cousin is the worm in the apple. Same idea, city scale.
What does the child need to know?
You need the card, scissor-hands (open-close like the lift), a blanket "mountain" to crawl through, and chalk for the trencher’s straight line.
Why this matters
Underground construction is invisible in real life — the blanket-tunnel game makes it edible. The scissor-finger mechanism is also a favourite hand exercise.
What it teaches
Mechanism imitation (scissor folding), through-tunnel crawling, straight-line drawing, and the underground-city idea (pipes and trains below!).

Say this to your child
“"Scissor lift — folds UP, like your hands! Material lift — hoist, hoist, up the scaffold! Tunnel borer — CRUNCH through the mountain, the biggest machine in the class! Trencher — draws a straight ditch, a giant pencil. Up, up, THROUGH, and line!"”
Step by step
- Up first: "scissor lift — folds UP like scissors! Material lift — hoists loads up the scaffold."
- Scissor-hands: open-close, open-close, rising — "that is the lift’s whole secret — folding scissors!"
- Through: "the tunnel borer — CRUNCH, CRUNCH — chews a tunnel through a MOUNTAIN. It is the biggest machine in this whole class!"
- The blanket mountain: crawl through while a partner chants "crunch, crunch, keep boring!" — the tunnel game.
- The line: "the trencher draws a long straight ditch — a giant pencil! Pipes and cables ride in its line."
Look closer at the picture
On this card the heading "Construction Vehicles" sits over a scissor lift rising, a material lift at its scaffold, a tunnel borer’s giant face and a trenching machine — up and through.
Ask your child
"What folds like scissors?" (the lift) "What chews tunnels?" (the borer — biggest machine!) "What draws the ditch?" (the trencher — a giant pencil!)
What your child can say or do
Your child might scissor-hand everything upward, blanket-tunnel on demand, or chalk trench-lines down the pavement — up and through, mastered.
Out in the real world
Metro tunnels are bored under most big cities — the machines make the news when they break through. Scissor lifts park at every shopping-centre ceiling repair.
Try it together
The Boring Company: sofa-cushion mountains, blanket tunnels, a crawling crew and a chant. The tunnel opens; the train (the child) drives through; the company declares dividends.
Understanding check
Ask: "What folds up?" (scissor lift) "What chews through mountains?" (the borer!) "What draws straight ditches?" (the trencher) — fold, chew, draw: up and through.
This lesson pairs with the Scissor Lift, Material Lift, Tunnel Borer & Trencher flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Transportation & Vehicles (Class 24).
