Cold Planer, Asphalt Recycler, Curb Machine & Slipform Paver — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches the road doctors: the planer that shaves old bumpy surface like a giant cheese grater, the recycler that melts it into NEW road, the curb machine that squeezes out sidewalk edges and the paver that glides fresh lanes into being.

A transportation flashcard headed Construction Vehicles: a cold planer, an asphalt recycler, a curb machine and a slipform paver, each labeled.

What is this?

Four road-fixing machines: cold planer (shaves old surface), asphalt recycler (melts chewings into new road), curb machine (extrudes the pavement edge) and slipform paver (pours fresh smooth lanes in one glide).

What does it mean?

This card is the construction set’s recycling lesson: old road is not rubbish — it melts and comes back as new road. And the curb machine answers how sidewalks get their raised edge.

What does the child need to know?

You need the card, an old crayon and a grater (grown-up hands — the planer demo), and the melt-and-return story for recycling.

Why this matters

"Roads can be born again" is recycling at infrastructure scale — concrete, visible, delicious to explain. The crayon-shaving demo makes the planer’s job sensory.

What it teaches

Recycling thinking at big scale, shave-melt-relay sequencing, the curb question (how DID the sidewalk get its edge?), and glide-pour continuity.

Say this to your child

“"Cold planer — scrape, the old bumpy road comes OFF! Recycler — melt the shavings into NEW road — roads are born again! Curb machine — squeezes the sidewalk’s edge like icing! Slipform paver — glide, glide, fresh smooth lane behind it. The road doctors!"”

Step by step

  1. The doctors: "cold planer — shaves the old bumpy road, like a giant cheese grater! Recycler — MELTS the shavings into new road! Curb machine — squeezes out the sidewalk’s edge. Slipform paver — glides along, leaving fresh smooth lane!"
  2. The crayon demo: grate an old crayon (grown-up) — "shavings! That is the planer’s job — old surface off."
  3. The recycling: "the shavings are not rubbish — they MELT and come back as brand-new road. Roads are born again!"
  4. The curb question: "how did the sidewalk get its raised edge? A machine SQUEEZES it out, like icing!"
  5. The glide: hand-gliding a block across the table leaving a "lane" — the paver’s one-pass magic.

Look closer at the picture

On this card the heading "Construction Vehicles" sits over a cold planer, an asphalt recycler, a curb machine extruding an edge and a slipform paver laying lane — the road doctors, mid-surgery.

Ask your child

"What shaves the old road?" (the planer) "What happens to the shavings?" (melted — NEW road!) "How does the sidewalk get its edge?" (squeezed out!)

What your child can say or do

Your child might grate crayons for science (supervised), explain road-born-again to everyone, or hunt curbs for squeezing evidence — recycling, infrastructure-scale.

Out in the real world

Road resurfacing closes lanes all summer: planers first, recyclers and pavers behind. Watch one resurfacing job and the whole card drives past.

Try it together

Road Hospital: the toy road is "bumpy" (build obstacles) — shave (grate side of a box, gently), recycle (melted crayon art, grown-up iron on paper), re-pave (smooth paper laid). Discharged, good as new.

Understanding check

Ask: "What does the planer do?" (shaves) "What happens to old road?" (born again — recycled!) "Who writes curbs?" (the curb machine) — shave, melt, squeeze, glide: roads mended.
