Bulldozer, Excavator, Crane & Forklift — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches the building site’s heart: four machines, four verbs — push, dig, lift, carry — acted out with cushions, spoons and rope before ever watching the real thing.

A transportation flashcard headed Land: a bulldozer, an excavator, a crane and a forklift, each labeled.

What is this?

Four site machines: bulldozer (push), excavator (dig), crane (lift high) and forklift (carry pallets, beep in reverse).

What does it mean?

Verbs are the deep structure of the construction cards: every machine in the eleven construction spotter sheets does one of these four things, fancier. Learn the verbs once and the whole construction shelf reads itself.

What does the child need to know?

You need the card and acting space: a cushion to push, a spoon to dig, a rope-chair "crane" (grown-up power), a box to carry. Then the site visit — from a safe distance.

Why this matters

Acting the verbs builds the category; watching the real machines names it. Order matters: act first, watch second, and the site suddenly makes sense.

What it teaches

Verb vocabulary (push, dig, lift, carry), gross motor imitation, machine-to-verb mapping, and safe-distance observation habits.

Say this to your child

“"Bulldozer PUSHES! Excavator DIGS! Crane LIFTS! Forklift CARRIES — beep, beep, backwards! Four machines, four verbs. Act them with me… now watch a real site: WHO is pushing? WHO is digging? Every machine does a verb!"”

Step by step

  1. Four machines, four verbs: "bulldozer PUSHES… excavator DIGS… crane LIFTS… forklift CARRIES."
  2. Act each: push the cushion, dig with the spoon, lift teddy high (grown-up crane), carry the box with a beep-beep reverse.
  3. The verb hunt on the card: point at each machine, call its verb — fast rounds, big voices.
  4. The site visit: watch a real site from across the road. "Who is pushing? Who is lifting?" The verbs land on steel.
  5. The bridge: "there are ELEVEN more construction cards in this class — all of them push, dig, lift or carry, somehow. Watch for it!"

Look closer at the picture

On this card the heading "Land" sits over a bulldozer, an excavator with its digging arm, a tower crane and a forklift with its pallet — the site’s four verbs, drawn working.

Ask your child

"Match each machine to its verb." "Which one beeps backwards?" "What did the crane lift on the real site?"

What your child can say or do

Your child might verb every machine on the road ("that one CARRIES!"), act the full site at bedtime, or explain sites to grandparents — verbs, welded to wheels.

Out in the real world

Every town has a site somewhere: fencing, mud, machines. One watched minute from safety teaches more verbs than a week of flashcards.

Try it together

Living-Room Site: cushions = soil, spoon = excavator arm, your arm = crane, shoebox = pallet. Run a full "job" — clear, dig, lift, deliver. Break for beep-beep tea.

Understanding check

Ask: "The four verbs?" (push, dig, lift, carry) "Match each machine." "What did the real crane lift?" — verbs first, machines second: the site reads itself.

This lesson pairs with the Bulldozer, Excavator, Crane & Forklift flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Transportation & Vehicles (Class 24).
