Boat, Ship, Sailboat & Submarine — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson opens the water cards with the floating four: boat and ship ride the surface, the sailboat borrows the wind, and the submarine dives under and vanishes.

A transportation flashcard headed Water: a boat, a ship, a sailboat and a submarine, each labeled.

What is this?

Four water vehicles: boat (small, general), ship (big, ocean), sailboat (wind-powered) and submarine (dives and hides).

What does it mean?

Water vehicles travel on no roads at all — the whole surface is the highway. The submarine is the set’s only vehicle that HIDES, and the sailboat is the only one powered by weather.

What does the child need to know?

You need the card, a basin or bath, floating and sinking toys, a paper sailboat and breath. The lab runs itself.

Why this matters

Float-or-sink is most children’s first science experiment — and this card turns bath night into the lab. Wind-power is the second lesson: weather can drive a vehicle.

What it teaches

Surface vs underwater thinking, wind-power introduction, float-sink experimentation, and size scaling (boat → ship).

Say this to your child

“"Boat! Ship! Sailboat! Submarine! The boat floats, the ship crosses oceans, the wind pushes the sailboat — whoosh — and the submarine dives down, down, UNDER. Float the toys… blow the sail… dive the submarine. Water transport!"”

Step by step

  1. Four floaters: "boat — small and handy. Ship — BIG, crosses oceans. Sailboat — the wind pushes it! Submarine — dives UNDER the water. Glub glub."
  2. The bath lab: float the toys — "which FLOAT like a boat? Which SINK like… a submarine diving?" Sort and re-sort.
  3. The wind test: paper sailboat, one strong blow — "the WIND moved it! That is how a sailboat works — weather power!"
  4. The dive: duck the submarine toy under — periscope up! "The submarine is the only one that HIDES."
  5. The size ladder: "a boat fits on a trailer. A ship needs a harbour. Same idea — different sizes."

Look closer at the picture

On this card the heading "Water" sits over a small boat, a big ship, a sailboat with white sails and a round blue submarine — the floating four, drawn afloat.

Ask your child

"Which one dives?" (the submarine!) "What pushes the sailboat?" (the wind!) "Which is biggest?" (the ship) "Which toys floated?"

What your child can say or do

Your child might run the float lab nightly, blow boats across every puddle, or dive toys with periscope sounds — water vocabulary, afloat.

Out in the real world

Harbours, lakes and the bath: boats dock everywhere. Ferry rides, sail sightings and submarine museums are all bookable water lessons.

Try it together

Harbour Sort: bath toys by water type — surface fleet (boats, ships), wind fleet (sails), dive fleet (submarine). Three fleets, one harbour, one captain.

Understanding check

Ask: "Name the floating four." "What powers the sailboat?" (wind) "Which one hides?" (submarine!) — surface, wind, dive: water opened.
