Changing Table — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches "changing table" as the address of a routine — and gives the toddler one real job per change, which is how changes stop being wrestles.

What is this?
The changing table is the raised station where diaper changes happen — a place with a name, which is exactly what makes the routine predictable.
What does it mean?
Toddlers resist surprises more than diaper changes. A named place plus a named sequence (up, lie down, fresh diaper, all clean) converts a wrestle into a script everyone knows.
What does the child need to know?
You need the same short script every change and ONE job to hand over: carrying the diaper, peeling a tab, holding the cream. The job is not decoration — it is the cooperation.
Why this matters
A routine with an address and a script survives travel, grandparents and growth spurts. The words stay the same even when the world does not.
What it teaches
Routine vocabulary, body awareness (lie down, legs up), handing and fetching, and the first link in the chain that ends at the potty.

Say this to your child
“"Changing table! Up we go. Lie down, little one — there you are. Hold the diaper for me… thank you, helper! Fresh diaper… tabs… ALL CLEAN! Down you hop."”
Step by step
- Name the destination as you lift: "changing table! Up we go."
- Lay down with the same words: "lie down… there you are."
- Hand over the job: "hold the diaper — carry it for me!" The carrier is a helper, not a captive.
- Narrate the middle briefly: "fresh diaper… tabs… click."
- Finish with the fanfare: "ALL CLEAN!" and lift down — the same words, every single time, until the toddler pre-says them.
Look closer at the picture
On this card the words "changing table" sit under a blue changing table with yellow shelves — the station itself, ready and waiting.
Ask your child
"Where do diaper changes happen?" "Can you carry the diaper?" "What do we say at the end?" (all clean!)
What your child can say or do
Your child might say "table!" on the way, carry the diaper with ceremony, or announce "all clean!" before you do — the script is theirs now.
Out in the real world
Change stations live in cafés, malls and airports — named, they are familiar ports, not ambushes. The script travels with you.
Try it together
Dolly’s Change: the teddy or dolly gets the full routine at the "little table" — the toddler runs every step and every word. The expert teaching the expert.
Understanding check
Ask: "Where do we change your diaper?" "Show me lie down." "What do we say at the end?" Address, pose, fanfare — the routine is owned.
This lesson pairs with the Changing Table flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Toddler Room.
