Towel — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches "towel" as the bath’s grand finale: wrapped like a burrito, dried in the same named order every time — head, tummy, toes — and the body words come free.

A toddler room flashcard titled towel: the word "towel" under a folded blue towel.

What is this?

The towel is the big blue wrap that ends every bath — and the named drying order is one of the friendliest body-parts lessons ever disguised as a routine.

What does it mean?

Drying in a fixed order does two jobs: the bath gets a predictable, cozy ending, and head-tummy-toes becomes a body map the child can recite on their own skin.

What does the child need to know?

You need the towel and the order: "towel dries the HEAD… towel dries the TUMMY… towel dries the TOES!" Same order every bath. The child’s job: drying a doll the same way.

Why this matters

The end of the bath is where escapes happen — the naked sprint down the hallway. A named, ceremonial drying routine catches the child inside the towel and the routine.

What it teaches

Body vocabulary, wrap tolerance (sensory), following a three-step order, and the care-task rehearsal that doll-drying provides.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Towel! Time to get dry — wrap you up like a burrito! Snug and warm. Towel dries the HEAD… towel dries the TUMMY… towel dries the TOES! All dry! Now you dry the dolly — head, tummy, toes!"”

Step by step

  1. Arms open at the bath’s end: "towel time! Into the big dry hug."
  2. Wrap like a burrito, snuggle tight — the wrap IS the game.
  3. Dry in the named order, slow and warm: "towel dries the HEAD… the TUMMY… the TOES!"
  4. Hand over a second towel and a doll: "your turn — dry the dolly. Head… tummy… toes!"
  5. The exit: "all dry, all cozy — bath finished!" The same order next bath, and the body words stick for good.

Look closer at the picture

On this card the word "towel" sits under a folded blue towel — thick, soft and waiting at the end of every bath.

Ask your child

"Where does the towel dry first?" (the head!) "Where does it dry last?" (the toes) "Can you dry the dolly?"

What your child can say or do

Your child might announce the order unprompted ("head! tummy! toes!"), wrap themselves, or dry every doll in the house — the ceremony, self-run.

Out in the real world

Towels follow swims, spills and rainy days. Beach towels, hand towels, the towel at grandma’s — the word and the order travel to every bath and every pool.

Try it together

Towel Shop: every doll and bear gets a full wash-and-dry service — bath (a bowl), wrap, the named drying order, tipped well. The launderette never closes.

Understanding check

Ask: "What dries you after the bath?" (the towel) "What dries first?" (head) "Show me the wrap!" — wrap, order, dry: cozy and complete.
