Toy Train — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches "toy train" as a journey: over the cushion mountain, through the chair tunnel, stop at the station — position words riding behind the little green engine.

A toddler room flashcard titled toy train: the words "toy train" under a green and red toy engine with two carriages.

What is this?

The toy train is the green engine with its red trim and two carriages — wheels that connect, a line that grows, and the chugga-chugga that carries position words for free.

What does it mean?

The train game is a preposition festival: over, under, through, round, stop. Every lap lands the words again — and the station stop teaches journeys have endings.

What does the child need to know?

You need the train and a course: cushion mountain (over), chair tunnel (under), rug lake (round). The station is a shoebox. The words name each obstacle as the train meets it.

Why this matters

Position words are the grammar of a toddler’s physical world — and the train repeats them with the enthusiasm only a chuffa-chuffa can supply.

What it teaches

Position/spatial words, tracking a moving object, sequencing (mountain, then tunnel, then station), and the pretend-narration that stories grow from.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Toy train! Choo choo! Chuffa chuffa… OVER the cushion mountain… UNDER the chair tunnel… round the rug lake… and STOP at the station! All aboard! Next stop — the sofa! Chuffa chuffa choo choo!"”

Step by step

  1. The first lap together: "toy train! Choo choo — chuffa chuffa chuffa!" Push it round the rug.
  2. The mountain: "OVER the cushion — up and over!" Name it as the wheels climb.
  3. The tunnel: "UNDER the chair — through the dark! …Out the other side!"
  4. The station: "STOP at the station — all aboard! Next stop: the sofa!" Passengers (small toys) board; the service expands.
  5. The child drives the route solo, narrating if they can — you ride as a passenger and ask: "what comes next?"

Look closer at the picture

On this card the words "toy train" sit under a green engine with red trim and two little carriages — coupled and ready, the journey about to start.

Ask your child

"Where does the train go?" (over! under! round!) "What does the train say?" (choo choo!) "Where does the journey end?" (the station)

What your child can say or do

Your child might say "choo choo!" through the tunnel, invent new stops ("grandma’s!"), or couple more carriages on — the network, expanding.

Out in the real world

Trains run through every town: the level crossing, the platform, the track under the bridge. Watching a real train after the toy is a revelation — "choo choo, but ENORMOUS!"

Try it together

Night Train: dim the lights, the engine’s headlamp (a torch) leads the route — over, under, through, station. Same words, new drama. Passengers: everyone, teddies included.

Understanding check

Ask: "What is this?" (toy train) "Where does it go?" (over, under, round) "Where does it stop?" (the station) — chuff, climb, stop: the journey is fluent.
