Exam Room — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches the exam room as the doctor’s own room: a bed to sit on that crinkles, a small sink, a poster on the wall — all of it expected, none of it strange.

A Doctor Visit flashcard titled Exam Room: the words "This is where check-ups happen" over a child sitting on an exam bed holding a teddy bear.

What is this?

The exam room is where the check-up happens: an exam bed covered in paper, the doctor’s tools on the wall, and a chair for the grown-up.

What does it mean?

Rooms feel big when they are unknown. Every named object — the paper bed, the crinkle, the sink — shrinks the room to a set of ordinary things that make sounds.

What does the child need to know?

You need the card and a couch cushion. The crinkle is the star: paper tablecloth, baking sheet, or actual wrapping paper — make the sound, name the sound, laugh at the sound.

Why this matters

The exam bed is usually the first thing the child meets in the real room. A child who has sat on a "crinkle bed" at home climbs straight up at the clinic — position wins half the check-up.

What it teaches

Sound-tolerance through play (crinkle = funny), room-mapping vocabulary, and the sitting-and-waiting posture the exam itself will ask for.

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Exam room! This is where check-ups happen. Sit on the big bed — CRINKLE! It talks! Teddy sits next to you, and the doctor will be right in."”

Step by step

  1. Show the card: "this is where check-ups happen."
  2. Name the furniture: exam bed, sink, poster, stool.
  3. Make the crinkle sound at home and make it funny — "the bed talks!"
  4. Build an exam room: cushion bed, teddy patient, paper "poster."
  5. At the real room: "the crinkle bed! Just like the card. Climb up."

Look closer at the picture

On this card the words "exam room — this is where check-ups happen" sit over a child sitting on an exam bed covered in paper, teddy bear in the lap, a heart poster on the wall.

Ask your child

"What room does the check-up happen in?" (the exam room) "What sound does the paper bed make?" (crinkle!) "Who sits next to you?" (teddy — and me)

What your child can say or do

Your child might crinkle every piece of paper in the house announcing "exam bed!", assign teddy the bed and take the chair, or ask if the real room has a poster of hearts.

Out in the real world

The exam room is also where grandpa gets his knee checked and where new babies are weighed — it is the doctor’s office, and its door opens for everyone.

Try it together

Crumple Choir: everyone gets a sheet of paper; the conductor points and the paper crinkles loud or soft. The sound that startles in a quiet clinic becomes an instrument here — mastered, owned, funny.

Understanding check

Ask: "What happens in the exam room?" (the check-up) "What sound does the paper make?" (crinkle) "Where does teddy sit?" (next to you, in the middle)

Staying safe

The exam bed is high — one hand on the child at all times in the real room, no exceptions, teddy positioned away from the edge. Say it the same way at home: "teddy sits in the middle."
