Microphone Flashcard for Preschoolers

A smiling microphone — not an instrument you play, but one that plays YOU. It takes the smallest voice in the room and hands it back the size of a stadium. Everyone stands straighter holding one.

A Music Room flashcard with the word "Microphone" and a smiling cartoon microphone with music notes around it.

What is this instrument?

A microphone listens to your voice and turns the sound into a signal, so speakers can play it back bigger. This one on the card has a happy face — microphones hear a lot of songs.

What does it do?

It makes voices big. In the Music Room it stands for every moment someone takes a breath, says hello-world into the mic and becomes a singer for exactly one song.

Why it helps a preschooler

A pretend microphone gives shy voices permission. Speaking one line into a hairbrush mic is a game; being heard is the result. Confidence has rarely had a cheaper prop.

Say it together

“La-la-LAAAA! Sing into your fist-microphone and let it grow your voice as big as a garden.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Hold a hairbrush or wooden spoon as your mic and announce something wonderful: “Good evening! Tonight we will eat spaghetti!” Then pass the mic — every person gets one announcement.

Quick parent note

The rule of real microphones: they only make you bigger, never better. Warm-ups first — then the song. A hairbrush mic also survives being dropped, which builds brave performers.
