Pull Flashcard for Preschoolers

Pull — the wagon word. Lean back, grip tight and the load comes along. This card is the satisfying half of tug: bringing something towards you, one strong step at a time.

A Playground flashcard with the word "Pull" and a boy pulling a little red wagon.

What does this word mean?

Pull means bringing something closer by dragging or tugging it towards you. Your body leans away from the load — that lean is the trick that makes pulling easier than it looks.

How do you do it?

Two hands on the rope or handle, one foot back, body leaning away. Small strong steps work better than one giant heave — pull is a rhythm, not a jolt.

Why it helps a preschooler

Pulling teaches weight — a wagon with one toy glides, a wagon with ten friends needs a plan. Children feel exactly how heavy “too much” is, and how to fix it: take something out.

Say it together

“Lean back and heave — pull, pull, PULL! The wagon follows the person who pulls it, like a duckling on wheels.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Load a laundry basket with toys, tie a rope on and make it a train with stations. The passenger load decides whether the engine glides or groans.

Quick parent note

Pull games have a natural stop signal: rope down. Teach it before the tug-of-war era begins.
