Walk Flashcard for Preschoolers

Walk — the get-there word. One foot, other foot, repeat until arrival. Slower than running, steadier than skipping, and the only way to carry an ice cream anywhere.

A Playground flashcard with the word "Walk" and a boy walking along happily.

What does this word mean?

Walk means moving on your feet at a steady, manageable pace — one foot always on the ground. It is the body’s everyday speed, and children get to choose it.

How do you do it?

Eyes up, shoulders easy, feet rolling from heel to toe. Walk a line, walk a circle, walk backwards — same word, four games.

Why it helps a preschooler

Walking is the pace where talking happens. Most of the day’s best conversations with a small child arrive at walking speed, midway between one interesting crack in the path and the next.

Say it together

“Heel, toe, heel, toe — walk! Walking is just falling forwards and catching yourself, over and over, on purpose.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Walk home the slow way and let your child lead. Every twenty steps they pick the next turn — the map goes silly, the walking never notices.

Quick parent note

“Walk, please” works better with a job attached: “walk me to the gate and count the dogs.” A mission beats a command every time.
