Blender — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches the blender from one safe step back: the child loads, announces and tastes — the grown-up owns the lid and the blades hidden underneath.

What is this?
A blender is the countertop machine that spins fruit into smoothies in twenty seconds — with the sharpest blades in the kitchen hidden at the bottom of its jug.
What does it mean?
The blender’s danger is invisible — blades under the jug, spinning too fast to see. "Lid on, blades are grown-ups’" said cheerfully at every smoothie is the whole protection.
What does the child need to know?
You need the blender, fruit and milk, and the division of labour: child loads, grown-up clicks the lid and presses the button, child announces the WHIRRR. Nobody touches the jug after — the grown-up pours.
Why this matters
A child who helped make the smoothie drinks the smoothie — the blender is the best anti-picky-eating machine ever built, and the ritual keeps it safe.
What it teaches
Sequence following, machine respect (not fear), the announcer job (language), and the fruit confidence that smoothies quietly build.

Say this to your child
“"Blender! Fruit goes in the jug — you load it! Lid on TIGHT — click. Press… WHIRRR! Everything spins into a smoothie! The blades are sharp and hidden — grown-ups pour. Now: the taste test!"”
Step by step
- Gather the fruit: "blender day! What goes in — banana? berries?" Child loads the jug.
- The lid: "grown-up clicks it TIGHT — the lid is the seatbelt!"
- The button: grown-up presses; the child is the announcer: "WHIRRR! It’s spinning!"
- Off, lid off by the grown-up only: "the blades live under there — sharp, sharp. Grown-ups handle the jug."
- Pour, serve, taste — and rate the smoothie. Tomorrow’s fruit list is already being written.
Look closer at the picture
On this card the word "blender" sits over a white countertop blender — jug on the base, the calm before the whirr.
Ask your child
"What goes in the blender?" "Who clicks the lid?" (grown-ups) "What do we say when it spins?" (WHIRRR!)
What your child can say or do
Your child might announce every whirr like a rocket launch, load tomorrow’s fruit unprompted, or refuse to drink anything NOT blended — power and produce, together.
Out in the real world
Smoothies happen at cafés, markets, grandma’s. Each whirr from another kitchen is a name-check: "a blender — like ours!" The rule rides along.
Try it together
Smoothie Bar: menus drawn, orders taken (teddies welcome), one blended "smoothie" (milkshake or yogurt blend) per round. The announcer job rotates — everyone gets a WHIRRR.
Understanding check
Ask: "Who clicks the lid?" (grown-ups) "Where do the blades live?" (under the jug — sharp!) "What does the blender say?" (WHIRRR!)
Staying safe
The blender hides the kitchen’s sharpest blades — under the jug, spinning too fast to see. Rule: lid on tight, blades and jug are grown-ups’, the child loads, announces and tastes.
This lesson pairs with the Blender flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Kitchen Things.
