Mug — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches the mug with its two rules built in: mugs are for WARM drinks (grown-ups pour), and the carry is two hands, walk slow, set down before you sip.

What is this?
A mug is the big cream cup with the handle — the grown-up cup, and the promotion every child waits for: a real mug of warm cocoa, carried and sipped alone.
What does it mean?
The mug card carries its own safety line: warm drinks only, grown-ups pour. The two-hand carry rule transfers to every jug, bowl and cup the child will ever move — spill physics, learned gently.
What does the child need to know?
You need a child-size mug of WARM (never hot) cocoa and the script: "two hands around… walk slow… set it down… then sip." The sip comes after the landing.
Why this matters
Being trusted with a real mug is a promotion kids feel in their chest. The rules are the price of the promotion — and they are the same rules that protect every future cup.
What it teaches
Handle grip and two-hand carry, walking-with-liquid control, the hot-warm distinction, and the table manners of a cup with a saucer’s dignity.

Say this to your child
“"Mug! The big cup with the handle. Two hands around it… walk slow… set it down… NOW sip. Mugs are for warm drinks — cocoa, warm milk — and grown-ups pour. You carry like a pro!"”
Step by step
- Present the promotion: "mug! The big cup — today YOU carry it."
- The pour (grown-up): "warm cocoa — warm, never hot. Grown-ups pour the mug."
- The carry: "two hands around the mug… walk slow… eyes on the cocoa."
- The landing: "set it down on the table… THERE. Now sip!" Sip after landing, every time.
- The repeat: mugs every cocoa night. The rules become the child’s own.
Look closer at the picture
On this card the word "mug" sits over a cream mug, handle out — the classic silhouette of every warm drink ever enjoyed.
Ask your child
"What drinks live in a mug?" (warm ones — cocoa!) "Who pours?" (grown-ups) "Show me the carry!" (two hands, slow)
What your child can say or do
Your child might request "mug cocoa" nightly, carry with breath-held concentration, or referee everyone’s grips — the promotion, honoured.
Out in the real world
Mugs hang in every kitchen and sit on every desk. Each one is a future promotion: "one day, a mug that size — first, master yours."
Try it together
Cocoa Ceremony: mugs, a small pot of warm cocoa, the full ritual — pour, carry, land, sip, sigh. Attendance mandatory; dignity guaranteed.
Understanding check
Ask: "What is a mug for?" (warm drinks) "How many hands carry it?" (two) "Sip before or after landing?" (after — always!)
This lesson pairs with the Mug flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Kitchen Things.
