Black — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
Five minutes, one card: say “black” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“The cat is black.”) and finish with one small game.

What it means
It names the color of coal and a night with no stars.
How to teach it
- Hold up the card and read “black” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: a b, an l, an a, a c and a k.
- Ask your child to find the first letter on the canvas and draw a ring around it, then say the whole word.
- Play the game below, say “black” one last time and stop while it is still fun.
How to say it
Say blak, like back and snack. Blend the b and l tightly.
Where to use it
Say it in a real sentence: “The cat is black.” Then try “I have a black bag.” Where to spot it: the night sky, a cat or a crayon.
Try this game
Hold up a black crayon and say black. Find black things and name them.
Understanding check
Ask your child to find something in the room that fits “black”, then to read the card without help.
Parent tips
Do not drill “black” on its own for long. Slip it into the books you read today and let the story do the practicing.
This lesson pairs with the Black flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
