Brown — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
Five minutes, one card: say “brown” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“The bear is brown.”) and finish with one small game.

What it means
It names the color of wood and soil.
How to teach it
- Hold up the card and read “brown” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: a b and an r, then an o, a w and an n.
- Cover the word with a hand and ask your child to say it from memory. Draw a big tick on the canvas when they get it.
- Play the game below, say “brown” one last time and stop while it is still fun.
How to say it
Say brown: br then ow as in cow, like town.
Where to use it
Say it in a real sentence: “The bear is brown.” Then try “I have a brown dog.” Where to spot it: the earth, trees and chocolate.
Try this game
Find brown things, such as a tree, a shoe and a bear, and line them up.
Understanding check
Ask your child to find something in the room that fits “brown”, then to read the card without help.
Parent tips
If “brown” slips away overnight, that is normal. Bring it back the next day with the same game and a smile.
This lesson pairs with the Brown flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
