Run — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

Five minutes, one card: say “run” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“I can run fast.”) and finish with one small game.

Sight word flashcard “run”: a boy runs in a full, energetic stride, with the word RUN printed below.
RunSight word flashcard · Card 22 of 52

What it means

It means to move fast on your feet.

How to teach it

  1. Hold up the card and read “run” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: an r with a stick, a u that cups upward and an n like a bridge.
  2. On the drawing canvas, let your child trace over the word with a finger or the pencil, then circle any letter they already know.
  3. Play the game below, say “run” one last time and stop while it is still fun.

How to say it

Say a short u: run, like sun and fun.

Where to use it

Say it in a real sentence: “I can run fast.” Then try “The dog will run.” Where to spot it: races, parks and any chase.

Try this game

Jog on the spot and say run. Chase a ball and say I run. Slow down and say walk.

Understanding check

Say “run” and ask your child to show you with their body, then to read the card back to you without help.

Parent tips

Keep it to five minutes, and add “run” to the card pile only when the words your child already knows feel easy.

This lesson pairs with the Run flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
