Came — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

Five minutes, one card: say “came” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“She came home.”) and finish with one small game.

Sight word flashcard “came”: a boy steps through an open wooden door into the house, with the word CAME printed below.
CameSight word flashcard · Card 21 of 52

What it means

It tells us someone arrived in the past.

How to teach it

  1. Hold up the card and read “came” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: an a with a silent e that makes it say its name.
  2. Cover the word with a hand and ask your child to say it from memory. Draw a big tick on the canvas when they get it.
  3. Play the game below, say “came” one last time and stop while it is still fun.

How to say it

Say kaym, like game and name. Long a with a silent e.

Where to use it

Say it in a real sentence: “She came home.” Then try “The dog came to me.” Where to spot it: storybooks, where we say who came or what came.

Try this game

Retell your day with came: The mail came. Dad came home. Your child adds another came.

Understanding check

Say “came” and ask your child to show you with their body, then to read the card back to you without help.

Parent tips

If “came” slips away overnight, that is normal. Bring it back the next day with the same game and a smile.

This lesson pairs with the Came flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
