Road Roller, Mixer, Dump Truck & Paver — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches the road crew in order: flatten the ground, mix the concrete, dump the gravel, lay the smooth black road — a full road, built on the living-room floor.

What is this?
Four road-building machines: road roller (flatten), concrete mixer (tumbling drum), dump truck (the load) and asphalt paver (the smooth layer behind it).
What does it mean?
This card answers the question every child asks while watching a street get fixed: who does WHAT? Four machines, four steps, one road — a sequence the toys can replay end to end.
What does the child need to know?
You need the card, a paint roller (the road roller), a spinning jar (mixer), a toy tipper and a rectangular block (paver). Build the road across the rug.
Why this matters
Sequence-building (step one, two, three, four) is the deep skill here — construction is the friendliest place to learn that big jobs are ordered small jobs.
What it teaches
Sequencing (build order), machine-to-step mapping, rolling and tipping motor play, and the road-under-our-feet appreciation.

Say this to your child
“"Road roller — FLAT! Mixer — round and round! Dump truck — CRASH, there is the gravel! Paver — smooth, smooth, the road appears! Four machines, four steps, one brand-new road. Now drive on it — the crew approves!"”
Step by step
- The crew in order: "road roller — sllloooow, FLAT. Mixer — round and round. Dump truck — tips the load, CRASH. Paver — lays the road smooth as icing!"
- Build it: flatten (roller), mix (jar spin), dump (tipper), lay (block slides forward leaving "road").
- The question: "next time a street is dug up — WHO does each step? Watch!"
- The roller’s charm: "the roller is a giant rolling pin — for roads instead of cookies."
- The road test: drive a toy car along the freshly laid rug-road. The crew inspects its work.
Look closer at the picture
On this card the heading "Construction Vehicles" sits over a road roller, a concrete mixer truck, a dump truck and an asphalt paver — the road crew, in build order.
Ask your child
"What does the roller do?" (flattens) "Which machine mixes?" "Which lays the road?" "What are the four steps?"
What your child can say or do
Your child might build roads across every rug, roll toys flat with rolling-pin reverence, or narrate street works like a foreman — the crew, employed.
Out in the real world
Road works hire the whole crew in public: rollers idling, mixers turning, pavers crawling. One ten-minute watch from safety covers the card.
Try it together
Roadworks Replay: the full sequence with toys — flatten, mix, dump, lay, DRIVE. Add a "road closed" sign (paper) for authenticity. Reopen when the crew waves through.
Understanding check
Ask: "Name the crew in order." "What flattens?" (roller) "What lays the smooth road?" (paver) — flatten, mix, dump, lay: a road is born.
This lesson pairs with the Road Roller, Mixer, Dump Truck & Paver flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Transportation & Vehicles (Class 24).
