Wheel Loader, Backhoe, Grader & Skid-Steer — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches the scoop squad: four machines built around moving material — big bites, back arms, flat shaves and one pirouetting dancer.

What is this?
Four loaders: wheel loader (swallows gravel heaps), backhoe loader (a digger riding on a loader’s back), motor grader (shaves ground flat) and skid-steer (tiny, fast, spins on the spot).
What does it mean?
All four exist for one verb — move material — which makes this the set’s cleanest compare-and-contrast: same job, four bodies. The skid-steer’s pirouette is the crowd favourite.
What does the child need to know?
You need the card, pom-poms as gravel, a scoop or dustpan, and one leg for the pivot test. The relay does the teaching.
Why this matters
Same-verb-different-body comparison builds real analysis: children stop seeing "diggers" and start seeing four tools for one job — each best at a different corner of it.
What it teaches
Comparative analysis, scoop-and-carry motor control, pivot balance (the skid-steer test), and material-handling vocabulary.

Say this to your child
“"Wheel loader — CHOMP, a big bite! Backhoe — digger on a loader’s back, two machines in one! Grader — shave, shave, flat as a pancake. Skid-steer — spin, spin on the spot, the dancer of the site! Four bodies, one job: MOVE IT."”
Step by step
- The squad: "wheel loader — one BIG bite of gravel! Backhoe — a digger riding a loader! Grader — shaves the ground flat as a pancake. Skid-steer — the little one that SPINS on the spot!"
- The relay: pom-pom gravel moved scoop-ful by scoop-ful — loader style, big bites only.
- The backhoe double: "two machines in one — digger behind, loader in front. It does BOTH jobs!"
- The pivot: stand on one foot, spin slowly — "a skid-steer pirouette! It turns on a coin, in the mud."
- The shave: the grader’s job is the FLAT — "smooth ground is the first step of every building."
Look closer at the picture
On this card the heading "Construction Vehicles" sits over a wheel loader, a backhoe loader, a motor grader and a skid-steer — the scoop squad, lined up.
Ask your child
"Which one spins?" (skid-steer!) "Which is two machines in one?" (backhoe) "What does the grader make?" (flat ground) "Move the gravel — how?" (scoop, big bites!)
What your child can say or do
Your child might pivot-spin through the kitchen, scoop-relay every pom-pom in the house, or spot backhoes on every street — the squad, hired.
Out in the real world
Every housing site runs the squad: loaders biting, graders shaving, skid-steers dancing between them. One fence-line view covers the card.
Try it together
Gravel Company: pom-poms mined from one bowl, delivered to another, flat-shaved at the end (the grader’s finish). Full shift, full pride, full nap.
Understanding check
Ask: "The one verb they share?" (move it!) "Who spins?" "Who is two machines?" — squad, verb, spin: compared and known.
This lesson pairs with the Wheel Loader, Backhoe, Grader & Skid-Steer flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Transportation & Vehicles (Class 24).
