Floor Cushion — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches "floor cushion" as ownership and wind-down: this spot is YOURS, and the flop onto it — with the big sigh — is the game that practises calming down.

What is this?

A floor cushion is the round blue pad that lives on the floor — a toddler-sized seat that belongs to whoever flops on it.

What does it mean?

A defined personal spot does quiet work: it answers "where do I fit?", gives big feelings a retreat with dignity, and gives grown-ups a non-sentence way to say "take a beat."

What does the child need to know?

You need the cushion parked somewhere consistent (book corner is ideal) and the flop ritual: stand, wobble, FLOP, sigh. The sigh is not decoration — it is slow breathing, taught by comedy.

Why this matters

Calming down is a skill, not a temperament. Practised daily on a cushion, the flop-sigh becomes a tool the child can carry to any floor in the world.

What it teaches

Body regulation (the sigh), ownership vocabulary, sitting stamina for books, and the spatial word pair "on" and "off."

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Floor cushion! Your very own soft spot. Watch me — wobble, wobble… FLOP! Aaaaah. Now you… FLOP! Big sigh! Cozy. This is where we read books and take soft landings."”

Step by step

  1. Introduce the spot: "floor cushion! This is YOUR spot."
  2. Demonstrate the flop: stand, wobble like a sleepy robot, FLOP — "aaaaah." Exaggerate the sigh; comedy is the teacher.
  3. Offer the turn: the toddler’s flop. Applaud the sigh especially.
  4. Park a book there: "your spot for stories." Read ON the cushion — the spot earns its job.
  5. On a stormy-feeling day, walk there together: "cushion time." No lecture, just the spot — the tool already knows what to do.

Look closer at the picture

On this card the words "floor cushion" sit under a round blue cushion — thick, soft and exactly the shape of a small sitting person’s landing.

Ask your child

"Where is YOUR spot?" "Show me the flop!" "Where do we read books?" (on the cushion)

What your child can say or do

Your child might say "my cushion!", flop dramatically on request, or drag a book there unprompted — ownership announced.

Out in the real world

Personal spots scale up: the reading corner at the library, the window seat at grandma’s, the car seat that is "mine." Spots of one’s own are a lifelong need, started on foam.

Try it together

Cushion Island: cushions on the floor are islands, the floor is water — hop, flop, read, repeat. The game ends the way islands should: everyone flopped, everyone sighing.

Understanding check

Ask: "What is this?" (floor cushion) "Whose spot is it?" (mine!) "Show me the flop!" — name, own, flop: the soft spot is claimed.
