Pajamas — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child
This lesson teaches "pajamas" through the dressing script — arm in, leg in, ZIP — and crowns the zip as the toddler’s official job, tonight and forever.

What is this?
Pajamas are the one-piece sleep suit with the yellow zip — the official uniform of bedtime, and the second hand on the bedtime clock.
What does it mean?
The pajama word is a signal: clothes, then teeth, then story, then crib. Same order nightly is what makes each step believable to a small body.
What does the child need to know?
You need the suit laid out and the three-part script said in the same order every night. The zip is non-negotiable child territory — guide the start, let the finish be theirs.
Why this matters
A child who does the zip ends the dressing as the owner of it. Ownership at the zip leaks upward into ownership of the whole bedtime.
What it teaches
Dressing vocabulary (arm, leg, zip), two-hand coordination, sequencing, and the pride loop that makes tomorrow night easier.

Say this to your child
“"Pajamas! The sleepy clothes. Arm in… leg in… now YOUR job — the zip! Hold it… pull… ZIIIP! All zipped — cozy pajamas! Bedtime team is dressed."”
Step by step
- Lay the suit flat: "pajamas! The sleepy clothes."
- Script the arms: "arm in… other arm in!" — the child pushes limbs through where they can.
- Script the legs: "leg in… leg in… wiggles check!"
- Hand over the zip: "your job — the zip! Hold the bottom… up you go… ZIIIP!" (Guide the tab into the carter, then let them pull.)
- Admire: "cozy pajamas — bedtime team, dressed!" Straight into the next routine step so the sequence locks in.
Look closer at the picture
On this card the word "pajamas" sits under a blue one-piece suit with the yellow zip down the front — the uniform, standing to attention.
Ask your child
"What are these?" (pajamas!) "Where does the arm go?" "Whose job is the zip?" (mine!)
What your child can say or do
Your child might say "zip!" with both hands ready, demand pajamas at the first yawn, or zip a jacket at breakfast for practice — the job is loved.
Out in the real world
Zips are everywhere: jackets, bags, tents. "Just like your pajama zip!" makes every zipper a practice rep for the big one.
Try it together
Dress the Teddy: teddy’s "pajamas" (a sock with a hole, ceremonially) go on arm-in-leg-in while the toddler narrates. The zip is the finisher — teddy’s or a bag’s, any zip counts.
Understanding check
Ask: "What are these?" (pajamas) "Show me arm in!" "Whose job is the zip?" — name, dress, zip: the bedtime team reports ready.
This lesson pairs with the Pajamas flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Toddler Room.
