Cutting Board Flashcard for Preschoolers
Ages 4–5Safe to use
The flat wooden board — the cutting board is where chopping happens, and it has a job kids love: it holds the food still and keeps the counter safe while little chefs work.

Say it together
“Cutting board! The wooden board for chopping. The food goes ON the board — never chop without the board! Your banana goes here, your butter knife does the cutting… safe and steady.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Set up the board with a banana and a butter knife (the kid-safe kind): slice the banana into coins for cereal or a snack. The board stays still, the butter knife cuts soft food, the fingers stay clear. Then upgrade to soft strawberries or cheese cubes. Chopping is the proudest kitchen job there is — the board is what makes it safe.
Quick parent note
The board card teaches a rule and a skill together: chopping happens on the board (never in the hand, never on the counter), and soft foods get the butter knife. Real slicing jobs with safe tools are how young cooks earn their way toward bigger knives — years later, on boards just like this one.
