The wooden spoon that stirs everything — the cooking spoon is the first tool of every little helper, big enough to grip, blunt enough to trust, and always up for a stir.

A kitchen flashcard titled Cooking Spoon: the words "cooking spoon" over a wooden spoon.

Say it together

“Cooking spoon! The big wooden spoon. Hold it like this… stir, stir, stir the batter. Round and round — you are the stirrer today!”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Fill a bowl with dry oats, hand over the spoon and let your child stir to their heart’s content — stirring dry is zero mess and all practice. Then promote the spoon to a real job: pancake batter, cake mix, scrambled eggs. The stir is the toddler’s signature on the meal.

Quick parent note

Stirring is grip strength, wrist control and patience in one motion. The wooden spoon is the classic first tool because it cannot cut, cannot scratch and forgives every enthusiastic swirl — which is exactly what a three-year-old’s stirring looks like.
