Peeler Flashcard for Preschoolers

Ages 6+Sharp — careful

The green swivel tool with the hidden blade — the peeler takes the skin off carrots and potatoes in long ribbons, and its edge is sharp enough that it lives in the grown-up-tools family for now.

A kitchen flashcard titled Peeler: the word "peeler" over a green vegetable peeler.

Say it together

“Peeler! The skin remover. It slides down the carrot… swish — long ribbons of skin fall off! The blade is sharp and hidden, so we LOOK with our eyes. Grown-ups peel; kids watch the ribbons fall.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Name it, find it in the drawer, open and close the blade gently (grown-up fingers on the blade end). Then watch the peeling demo — the ribbons are the show — and collect them for the compost or a soup pot. The rule comes with it: the peeler’s edge is sharp even when it looks tiny, so it is a grown-up tool until hands grow bigger and steadier.

Quick parent note

The peeler looks harmless and is not — which is exactly why it is a great sharp-things teacher. Watching peels curl off in ribbons also answers a child question most adults never think to answer: where does the carrot’s skin GO? Into the ribbons, into the soup, into the compost — the whole loop, visible.
