Oven Mitt Flashcard for Preschoolers

Ages 4–5Safe to use

The quilted green glove — the oven mitt is the glove that fights heat: slide it on and even a hot tray can be carried. It looks like a puppet and works like a shield.

A kitchen flashcard titled Oven Mitt: the words "oven mitt" over a green quilted oven glove.

Say it together

“Oven mitt! The thick, puffy glove. The mitt stops the heat — hot tray? No problem, the mitt says! Grown-ups wear the mitt for the hot things… and look — it fits your hand too, for the cool trays.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Wear the mitts for a puppet show first — mitts say hello, mitts give a high-five — so the glove is a friend before it is equipment. Then the real lesson: the mitt goes on BEFORE touching anything that was in the oven, and the grown-up’s hand goes under the child’s for anything properly hot. Mitt on, both hands, slow walk — the oven-to-counter parade.

Quick parent note

The oven mitt card teaches the WHY of kitchen safety gear: heat travels, the mitt blocks it. Children who understand the mitt’s job respect the hot things more, not less — because now they know exactly what heat does and exactly what stops it.
