Jump Flashcard for Preschoolers

Jump — both feet leave the ground and for one bright moment gravity lets go. Off a step, over a puddle, down from the bottom rung: this card is pure joy with a landing.

A Playground flashcard with the word "Jump" and a boy jumping mid-air with both arms up.

What does this word mean?

Jump means pushing off the ground with both feet and coming back down. The secret ingredient is the bend before it — knees crouch like springs, then let go.

How do you do it?

Bend, swing your arms back, then throw them forward as your legs push. Land on two flat feet with soft knees — “land like a frog, not like a statue.”

Why it helps a preschooler

Jumping builds the biggest muscles in the body and the biggest feelings too — the first real jump is usually followed by ten more and one proud announcement: “DID YOU SEE THAT?”

Say it together

“Bend your knees… wiggle… JUMP! Both feet up, both feet down, land like a cat with bendy knees.”

Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.

Try this

Chalk two lines on the path and jump between them, then widen the river one shoe-length at a time. How wide can the crocodile river get before the jumping fails?

Quick parent note

Landing is the skill worth teaching first. Soft landings make brave jumpers — and keep ankles, floors and furniture friends.
