Garlic Press — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

This lesson teaches the garlic press as a mechanism to admire: a clove goes in, both handles squeeze, tiny garlic comes out the holes — smelly, strong and delicious.

What is this?

A garlic press is the green squeezer that crushes a clove into mince in one squeeze — a lever machine with a little basket and a wall of tiny holes.

What does it mean?

The Ages 6+ cards are what-is-this cards: named, explored, understood — not yet used. The press is a favourite because its mechanism is visible: squeeze here, mince there.

What does the child need to know?

You need the press, a garlic clove and a grown-up’s hands over the child’s for the squeeze. The smell afterwards is the party trick.

Why this matters

Tools whose mechanism can be SEEN (lever! holes! pressure!) teach how machines think. The press is a lever lesson that ends in spaghetti sauce.

What it teaches

Mechanical thinking (lever, pressure, holes), sensory vocabulary (smell!), and the future-cook promise: "you’ll use one someday."

Words to learn

Say this to your child

“"Garlic press! A clove goes in the basket… SQUEEZE both handles… and out comes tiny garlic through the holes! Smell it — strong and delicious! It is a lever machine. You will use one someday — today, you know its trick."”

Step by step

  1. Meet the machine: "garlic press! The squeezer — look at the little basket and the tiny holes."
  2. Open and close the handles: "it is a LEVER — squeeze here, press there."
  3. The demo, hands together: clove in the basket… "SQUEEZE!"… open — "tiny garlic through the holes!"
  4. The smell test: "sniff! THAT is garlic. Strong, isn’t it?"
  5. The promise: "one day, big hands, your squeeze. Today you know its name and its trick."

Look closer at the picture

On this card the words "garlic press" sit over a green press with two handles and a basket of holes — the mechanism, visible and waiting.

Ask your child

"What goes in the basket?" (a garlic clove) "What do we do?" (squeeze!) "What comes out the holes?" (tiny garlic!)

What your child can say or do

Your child might squeeze air enthusiastically, smell everything garlic-adjacent, or request "the squeezer" for spaghetti night — mechanism, adored.

Out in the real world

Garlic presses squeeze in kitchens worldwide — and the lever idea repeats in nutcrackers, staplers and car jacks. One press, a family of machines.

Try it together

Lever Hunt: find the house’s squeezers and pressers — nutcracker, peg, stapler (grown-up hands). "Same trick as the garlic press!" Machines, reunited.

Understanding check

Ask: "What does the press do?" (minces garlic) "What kind of machine is it?" (a lever!) "What comes out the holes?" (tiny garlic!)
