Here — a step-by-step lesson for grown-up and child

Five minutes, one card: say “here” clearly, use it in a real sentence (“I am here.”) and finish with one small game.

Sight word flashcard “here”: a boy points firmly down at the spot where he stands, with the word HERE printed below.
HereSight word flashcard · Card 40 of 52

What it means

It names the place where someone is now.

How to teach it

  1. Hold up the card and read “here” slowly, sliding a finger under it. Point out its shape: an h, an e, an r and another e on the end.
  2. On the drawing canvas, let your child trace over the word with a finger or the pencil, then circle any letter they already know.
  3. Play the game below, say “here” one last time and stop while it is still fun.

How to say it

Say heer, like near and ear.

Where to use it

Say it in a real sentence: “I am here.” Then try “Come here.” Where to spot it: roll call, hide-and-seek and be here.

Try this game

Stand somewhere and say I am here, then move and say it again. Hide and say Here I am!

Understanding check

Ask your child to show “here” by pointing or moving, then to read the card without help.

Parent tips

Keep it to five minutes, and add “here” to the card pile only when the words your child already knows feel easy.

This lesson pairs with the Here flashcard in the library — print it, show it, keep it on the fridge. Back to Sight Words (Class 29).
