Pencil Flashcard for Preschoolers
Ages 2+Classroom object
The yellow pencil with the pink top — the pencil is the tool writing starts with, and holding it is a skill the hand learns one grip at a time.

Say it together
“Pencil! The yellow pencil. Pinch it near the point — thumb, finger, finger. Make a dot… a line… a wiggle! The pencil talks when your hand moves.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Try "pencil races": you draw a slow line, your child draws a fast one; you draw a circle, they try one. Big paper, fat grip, no corrections — the goal is a hand that wants to come back tomorrow, not a perfect letter today.
Quick parent note
Grip grows in stages — fist, then fingers, then the grown-up tripod grip. A shorter pencil actually encourages finger use, so a half-used pencil is a fine first writer for small hands.
