Mortar and Pestle Flashcard for Preschoolers
Ages 6+Grown-up tools
The stone bowl and its grinding club — the mortar and pestle crushes herbs and seeds the way people have done for thousands of years. It might be the oldest kitchen tool on the whole shelf.

Say it together
“Mortar and pestle! The stone bowl and the grinding club. Seeds go in the bowl… grind, grind, grind in circles… the seeds become powder. People have used these since long, long ago!”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Name it, hold it, feel the weight — then watch a grown-up grind a few peppercorns or dried herbs and smell the difference: fresh-ground smells like the plant woke up. Try grinding a pinch of (safe, clean) rice with a grown-up’s hand guiding — heavy, slow, satisfying. Ancient tool, brand-new smell.
Quick parent note
The mortar and pestle is a history lesson hiding in a kitchen drawer — the same tool carved the same way fed the pharaohs. For the Ages 6+ crew the point is the question it answers: food did not always come pre-ground; someone crushed it, and now you know with what.
