Tugboat, Dredger, Hydrofoil & Paddle Steamer Flashcard for Preschoolers
Ages 4–5Water
The harbor’s special four: the little tugboat that pushes giant ships, the dredger that eats mud from the bottom, the hydrofoil that lifts its hull and FLYS on stilts and the old paddle steamer that walks on its own wheels of water.

Say it together
“Tugboat! Dredger! Hydrofoil! Paddle steamer! The tiny tugboat PUSHES the giant ship — toot toot! The dredger sucks mud like a vacuum. The hydrofoil rises up on wings and flies over the water! And the paddle steamer goes round and round with its paddle wheels — the oldest dance on the river.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Tug test: can a small toy push a big book across the table? (Slowly… yes — that is a tugboat’s whole job.) Then the hydrofoil question: why would a boat want to LIFT out of the water? (Less splash, more speed.) Harbor boats are the riddle cards of the water set.
Quick parent note
The tugboat is the set’s best David-and-Goliath story — small, mighty, essential. The hydrofoil is the bridge to the Air cards: a boat that flies. And the paddle steamer is the steam locomotive’s river cousin, wheeling through the same century.
