Chef’s Knife Flashcard for Preschoolers
Grown-ups onlyKnives are for grown-ups
The kitchen’s sharpest tool — the chef’s knife does the serious chopping on the serious board, and this card exists for one reason: to teach the kitchen’s biggest rule out loud, early, and kindly.

Say it together
“Chef’s knife! The big, sharp knife. This is the kitchen’s most important rule: KNIVES ARE FOR GROWN-UPS. Not today, not with help — grown-ups only. Your jobs are the butter knife, the spoon, the whisk. The chef’s knife waits for big hands, years from now.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Say the rule at the drawer, at the counter, at every chopping session — the same words, until the child says them first: "knives are for grown-ups." Give the sharp respect without the fear: the knife is a great tool that stays in the grown-up zone. Then point at the child’s own tools — the butter knife, the board, the banana to slice — so helping never stops, it just uses the right tools.
Quick parent note
Owner’s rule, taught straight: "knives are for grown-ups." The knife stays on the card and on the wall because hiding sharp things makes them fascinating, while naming them makes them understood. A child who knows the rule, the reason and their own safe tools is the safest child in the kitchen — and in a few years, on a board like this one, they will start again with a butter knife exactly the way they started here.
