Colander Flashcard for Preschoolers
Ages 4–5Safe to use
The green bowl full of holes — the colander lets water escape and keeps the food in, which is exactly the magic kids want to know about: where does the pasta water GO?

Say it together
“Colander! The bowl with holes. In go the grapes… water on… woooosh — the water runs through the holes and the grapes stay in! The colander drains the water away.”
Say it naturally, then wait. Whatever comes back — the word, the sound, a point, a giggle — is the right answer.
Try this
Wash fruit together: grapes or berries in the colander, your child works the tap, watches the water through the holes and shakes the bowl gently to dry. Then the grand demo — draining pasta (grown-up carries the hot pot, your child holds the colander steady in the sink). Holes that hold food and lose water: kitchen physics, visible.
Quick parent note
The colander teaches the filter idea — let liquid through, keep the solid — which shows up again in sieves, strainers and tea bags for the rest of life. Washing fruit in it is also a zero-risk job with a genuine result: clean fruit the washer is proud to eat.
